Matthew Boyer is a 152-pound senior wrestler for the Trevians. Boyer is 20-3 on the season and recently finished fifth at Mid-States Wrestling Classic in Wisconsin.
1. Do you have any pre-game or pre-game rituals or superstitions?
I have a bunch of crazy socks that I usually wear before my wrestling meet. I have a couple with eggs and bacon and some with swordfish on them. I also eat a few tangerines and a few peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before dating.
2. What are your plans for next year?
I’m looking to study business, but don’t know what university I’m going to – probably somewhere in the Big Ten. I am looking for something in finance or (economics). And I don’t know if I’m going to wrestle in college. If I have the chance, I will, but I still take it with coaches.
3. What is your favorite activity outside of the mat?
I like going out with my friends. I like going to see movies. In the winter, I love to go to Wisconsin with my family and go sledding, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. In the summer we like to go… fishing. My dad started teaching me how to fish for salmon last summer.
4. What is your dream job?
Right now, maybe somewhere in private equity or somewhere on the stock market. … I think it’s pretty interesting – investing in different companies, kind of like “Shark Tank”, and my mom was in private equity, so I have a little bit of knowledge about that.
5. If you could play another sport, what would it be?
Probably football. I played in second grade and quit. I got hurt. I had a concussion and fractured a vertebra while struggling. I wish I had played junior and senior football. Lots of wrestlers played football. Jack Cummings played soccer and was All-Conference. I missed it. It would have been fun.
6. What can’t you live without?
Probably a chicken barbecue pizza. I probably eat it every week after dating. It’s my favorite meal. I get it from JP McCarthys (at Wilmette). I get a big barbecue chicken pizza and eat it all.
7. If you are at Walgreens with a few dollars, what do you buy?
Probably Jolly Rancher Chews, one of my favorite candies. It’s quite expensive for candy. So if I only have two dollars, maybe a packet of chewing gum or some 99 cent Arizona iced tea.
8. What makes you a good wrestler?
Probably my training partner. It has a lot to do with becoming a good wrestler. If you have no one to face every day, how are you going to improve? I mentioned Jack Cummings who weighs a little more then another friend who is really good Ely Polacek is usually my training partner. He’s fast, super strong and always pushes me to push myself.
9. What is the thing people don’t know about you?
That I was actually Baby Bob for Quizno. I was a talking baby (in TV commercials in 2005). It’s always a fun little ride that I can take out from time to time.
10. How is this team performing this season and what can they accomplish?
This season I was coming in with pretty high expectations and really hoping we could come back one after the other and win the conference again. We went to an unbeaten game (against Glenbrook South). … And we didn’t fight our best that day. We lost more than 10 points and we weren’t supposed to lose on paper. It was really disappointing for me. But this team is looking to continue winning duels. We’re 10-1 so far and have seven duels this week. We’re looking to go 17-1 and have the best record possible, breaking the New Trier record.
