BROMSGROVE residents are warned to beware of cold calls offering in-home installation.
Worcestershire County Council Trading Standards issued the warning following concerns raised by the community of Bromsgrove via the District Council’s Community Safety Team.
Cold calling can sometimes be a front for dishonest merchants looking to defraud vulnerable consumers.
They have been known to make false claims such as ‘working for or on behalf of local authorities’ or ‘working with trading standards’.
Councilor Karen May, cabinet member responsible for health and wellbeing at Worcestershire County Council, said: ‘This is a worrying trend and I am grateful to our trading standards officers for bringing this to public attention.
“I would advise residents to remain vigilant and warn vulnerable family, friends and neighbors of the danger with these calls.”
Trading Standards advises residents not to agree to work on a cold call or leafleting, and if contacted, do not divulge or confirm any personal information.
Residents should obtain at least three written quotes from reputable businesses or merchants who are members of a recognized trade association.
